New Project…

I have just started working on a very new and exciting project. The theme for this project is centered around women, strength, beauty and grace. In my own life I find myself constantly inspired by different women. Different artists. Different athletes. Different mothers. Different friends. So, I have decided to document several women I know through photography. I am very excited about this.

I started photographing a yoga instructor I know. She represents so much of what I look to in a role model. She is strong, funny, beautiful, caring, nurturing, adventurous and really just a lovely person. Photographs to come….

One of my favorite pastimes is training for triathlons. There is something about combining the three sports that is quite and engaging and I love the challenge. Today I had the chance to switch gears and instead of competing, I was able to observe the race, cheer on my friends and bring along my camera. What an experience. I am lucky to have come across a moment that really defines a woman, a mother, and an athlete.

Sometimes I feel that photography can take me to places I have never been or never really can get to. It has the ability to awaken different senses that I might otherwise take for granted. One of those senses, or places I don’t get to visit very often is that of quiet, of solitude, of peacefulness.

I think that quiet is something I take for granted quite often, especially with two small children. When I am behind the lens of my camera, however, I can get there quickly and without great effort. This I am grateful for.

During my years as a college student, I took a semester off from the world of academia and traveled to the East Coast for a semester of adventure. During this time I sailed, canoed and backpacked through the beautiful states of Maine and New Hampshire. This was perhaps one of the most important times in my life. I learned such a great deal about myself, my strengths, my weaknesses, trust, laughter, pain and perseverance. The most important thing I learned about, however, was memory.

Memory is something that comes in so many forms. Whether we dream of days past or retell our experiences to friends and family, our memories serve a wonderful purpose. I have found that photography is the most important source of memory for me. I learned this on my journeys into the wilderness. Fifteen years later I am able to look at one of my photographs and instantly remember what that time was like. These photographs stir my emotion. These photographs bring scents of the Maine Fall to my mind. These photographs remind me of the life lessons I learned. These photographs are my memory.

I feel lucky to be able to photograph, to preserve and enhance memory for my family and for others. It is a privilege and honor to do this, to capture these memories. Thank you for visiting my site and welcome.
